About half the world’s population is anticipated to be short-sighted (myopic) by year 2050 and the chief reason that contributes to this grave vision ailment is the technology hackneyed. According to new research published by Ophthalmology department, approximately 5 billion people would be suffering from myopic in the next thirty years and one-fifth of them which is 1 billion would be at a significant increased risk of complete blindness if the current technological and lapse of health management trends continue. Science claims that looking at colors can relax your eyes as well as your mind. Yes, that’s right. Colors have a splendid impact on humans; emotionally, psychologically and physically. Experts especially psychologists and ophthalmologists have to say that red shades or darker shades tend to stimulate the stress response in human brain making them more anxious and confused, while lighter or cooler shades such as green and yellow shades help to cool and calm you down by reducing anxiety.

Why color green?

On dividing the spectrum of light from sun or any other hot objects such as filament of incandescent lamp, a clear rainbow color pattern form red to purple is easily discerned. However, modern light sources such as televisions, computer screen, smartphones screen, they emit blue light as they create the light by exciting the atoms in other ways. Due to different wavelengths, some colors are considered more sensitive than others which have good and bad effects on human health. Cells in human eye retina can detect three colors of different wavelengths, red, green and blue. Out of these colors, green color has medium wavelength that has soothing and healing effects on eyes. Color vision is due to presence of cone cells in retina and people with absolutely normal vision have 3 cone cell types that are red, green and blue, and there is total 6-7 million of cone cells in human retina out of which 45% are green. Hence, human eyes need to work minimal to perceive color. Dark green shades such as pine trees color are the most relaxing shades. People who work constantly on computer systems or in media lines or kids who spend most of their time on gadgets and smartphones or computers can reduce eye strain and burning sensation in eyes by looking at green views or color that should be located at least 33 centimeters away for better and instant results.

How green color reduces strain on eyes?

Green shade or color absorb harmful UV rays of strong lights and also help reducing glare that cause eye strain. The green shades remove and reduce fatigue in eyes and anxiety when you get glimpse of nature far away. The color green has healing effects on eyes and brain. It is very restful to the eyes unlike red shades which is an emotionally charged color. Hence looking at green color or views provide your eyes rest and break to help calm you down mentally.

Green color is one of the light colors like cyan and yellow that impart us with cool and comfort feeling. Absorbing maximum UV rays, green color improves eye health but that doesn’t mean this color has anything to do with protecting eyes. Green shades, views or lights help in regulating the circadian rhythm. However, overexposure to green light or color at night, like blue light, has potential to reset the clock, by disturbing the balance of natural rhythm.

How green color reduces mental stress?

Human eyes are designed to translate light into colors. The human retina as identifies colors between 400-700 nanometers, where blue remains lowest and red with highest side of the color spectrum. And the color green which is a mixture of blue and yellow light, remains at about 550 nanometers which makes it easier for the human retina to discern. Some scientists and researchers also have to say that as human eyes are at the crest of their perception to recognize the wavelengths associated with color green, the green shade helps in calming down the human mind by declining mental stress. The reason is with minimum strain to discern the colors, the human nervous system completely relaxes while perceiving the tone.

The sedative and relaxing quality of green color is the only reason why green shades are mostly used in hospitals, work places, schools and offices. Moreover, there is another reason why long time before modern technology emerged, actors and actresses tend to take breaks for their green rooms after prolonged exposure to bright lights on stage, however, modern “green rooms” these days are hardly painted green or have any green shade exposure rather incorporated with more bright lights fitted into the mirrors. Green shade is considered as restful, relaxing and quiet color as it symbolizes nature. It is the most comforting color that derives harmonious feelings by reducing anxiety, stress and helping people to stay calm, relaxed and refreshed.
